Physical Literacy Education: An Essential Discipline
In broad terms, the traditional coaching system is being replaced by a model which focuses on teaching quality which in turn has brought the performance of schools, clubs and their communities in to sharp focus.
High-quality physical education instruction contributes to good health, develops fundamental and advanced motor skills, improves students self-confidence, and provides opportunities for increased levels of physical fitness that are associated with high academic achievement.
The GIPL approach recognises the sacrifice and good intentions of sports coaches. GiPL aims to empower educators to resolve the challenges that have beset the global learning environments in which they operate.
Mastering fundamental movement skills at an early age establishes a foundation that facilitates further motor skill acquisition and gives students increased capacity for a lifetime of successful and enjoyable physical activity experiences. Similarly, the patterns of physical activity acquired during childhood and adolescence are likely to be maintained throughout ones life span, providing physical mental and social benefits
GIPL's current work has assisted in building up the information base, best practices and standards needed to achieve the objective of creating a seamless global physical literacy standard.

promotes excellence in physical education instruction for all students teaches students how their bodies move, how to perform a variety of physical activities and how it impacts their lives. Students learn the health-related benefits of regular physical activity and the skills to adopt a physically active, healthy lifestyle. The discipline also provides learning experiences that meet the developmental needs of students. With high-quality physical literacy education instruction, students become confident, independent, self-controlled, and resilient; develop positive social skills; set and strive for personal, achievable goals; learn to assume leadership; cooperate with others; accept responsibility for their own behavior; and, ultimately, improve their academic performance. The model content standards provide opportunities for teachers to reinforce student learning in all areas of the curriculum. The standards link the content in physical education with content in English language , science, mathematics and social science, thereby establishing and emphasizing the many connections between the subjects.
Does the Global Institute of Physical Literacy Education Model Content Standards cater for ALL kids?
Rowan Windvogel, founder of the Global Institute of Physical Literacy , has 17 years of clinical physiotherapy experience working in acquired brain injury units in Ireland and South Africa. Championing the rights of marginalised communities is engrained in Rowan's DNA after he overcame the challenges of apartheid to become a physiotherapist. This is evident in the standards and detailed Training-Needs-Analysis carried out prior to programme delivery. At a recent Paediatric Physiotherapy Conference, physiotherpaists working within Special olympics structures in Ireland remarked " We are glad to see that the Global Institute of Physical Literacy Model and standards is user friendly for ALL users , including children with physical disablities and challenging behaviours"
Athletes, with and without a disability, need to acquire FUNdamental movement and sport skills, or physical literacy, through fun and games, and this needs to be achieved prior to puberty. Children with a disability face difficulties in acquiring FUNdamental skills because of :
overly protective parents, caregivers, rehabilitation facility staff, teachers, and coaches shield them from the bumps and bruises of childhood playadapted physical education is not well developed in all school systems.some coaches and programs do not welcome children with a disability to their activities because of a lack of knowledge about how to integrate them.it takes creativity to integrate a person with a disability into a group activity where FUNdamental skills are practiced and physical literacy is developed.
The Global Institute of Physical Literacy Education Model Content Standards takes in to consideration all of the above to ensure that the needs of ALL children are taken care of ,irrespective of ability. All qualified Physical Literacy educators are obliged to know and practise according to these standards. Furthermore, the diverse cultural backgrounds of the GIPL team ensures that all programmes are cultural-proofed and cleared by policy advisor, Ken McCue ,International Officer of Sports Against Racism Ireland.
Who does Global Institute of Physical Literacy Education Model Content Standards apply to?
Using three focused programs on life skills, learning skills, and sports skills, based on systematic learning tools provided by the 'Global Insitute of Physical Literacy , Physical Literacy initiatives are aimed at teachers or coaches who find themselves under pressure to deliver more socially balanced individuals whilst contending with reduced resources, reduced concentration spans amongst learners, sedentary lifestyles and high drop-out rates from sport.
Teachers and coaches operating within mainstream education and traditional sports coaching will find the GIPL approach as a breakthrough in terms of turning well-intentioned efforts into positive , measurable change.
The GIPL approach teaches children holistically, rather than in the piecemeal manner of the current system.
Teachers and Coaches using the tools of GIPL explain concepts more easily and make the learning process interactive for students.
